The Friends of Maxwell Park, Pollokshields, Glasgow

PURPOSE OF THE FRIENDS OF MAXWELL PARK
The Friends of Maxwell Park is a charitable association owned and run by its members. The association provides a structure for the community enabling people who have an interest in Maxwell Park to come together. Membership is free. The Association relies on donations from members and supporters. Members may wish just to be a ‘Friend’ and enjoy the Park or may wish to contribute more actively to the work of the association.

The Friends of Maxwell Park works to:

  1. Advance local heritage by supporting and maintaining Maxwell Park as gifted by Sir John Stirling Maxwell to the people of Pollokshields;
  2. Promote and encourage the continued use of the park for the use, enjoyment and benefit of all the people, cultures and communities of Pollokshields.
  3. Promote activities for the public benefit by supporting and furthering Maxwell Park as a centre for environmental education and recreation;
  4. Secure the protection of the environmental amenity of the park and its precincts.

Unique legacy

Maxwell Park is a unique legacy. It contains many plants first introduced to the gardens of Pollok House by George Forrest the distinguished plantsman whose expeditions to the Himalayas were responsible for many unique species becoming part of Scotland’s garden heritage at Pollok House and the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.

Greenspace activities
Maxwell Park provides for many interests. Sports and leisure including a safe and attractive children’s play area, dog-walking, appreciation of local wildlife around the pond and of the variety of trees and plants growing in the park, are among the many opportunities available to young and old in this special greenspace, as well as local events and environmental activities.
